After School
After School Programs Enrich Children's Lives

Today most parents work outside the home. Experts estimate that more than 5 million "latchkey" children come home to empty houses. After school programs provide a structured, safe, supervised place for after school learning, fun and friendship. In Region 2, there are a number of after school programs presently offered at or near local school sites.

According to the U.S. Department of Education, school-age children and teens who are unsupervised during the hours after school are far more likely to:

  • Use alcohol, drugs, and tobacco
  • Engage in criminal and other high-risk behaviors
  • Receive poor grades
  • Display behavior problems
  • Drop out of school at higher than average rates
In a 1994 Harris poll, more than one-half of teachers singled out "children who are left on their own after school" as the primary explanation for students' difficulties in class.

"As educators, we must strive for children to have a safe and enriching place to go after school so that they can participate in activities such as reading, computer labs, and sports."
Jerry McGuire, past Superintendent
Butte County Office of Education

The Before and After School and 21st Century Community Learning Centers provide funding for local after school education and enrichment programs. These programs help improve students' academic success, attendance and behavior. The curriculum includes reading, computer skills development, nutrition, sports, recreation, science club, and visual and performing arts. They bring collaborative partnerships with YMCA, boys and girls club, and Parks & Recreation to the school site.
